  • Capsule Wardrobes

We’ve all heard the phrase before. Capsule wardrobe. What does it mean and why is it so intimidating? Some thoughts that come to mind might be of stark, colourless closets, shapeless black garments, or bland outfits with no personality.

A capsule wardrobe that is well curated will be none of that. In fact, a capsule wardrobe is a great way to really narrow down your personal style, best colours, and let your personality shine through your clothes. A capsule wardrobe is essentially a curated collection of clothing that fits well, compliments each other and can build cohesive outfits by mixing and matching. So how do we start building one?

The first thing you need to do is figure out how the clothes you wear relate to your lifestyle. Are you an office worker with a 9-5 job, a stay at home mom juggling kids and laundry, or maybe an executive who travels for work? Each of these people will have different needs from their wardrobes and so will you!

The second thing you need to know is what your sense of style is. Classic and timeless, rugged, sporty, edgy. Whatever your sense of style is will dictate the type of pieces you will have in your closet.

Decide on a base colour that is neutral such as black, navy, beige, or brown. Choose two or three accent colours which are flattering to your skin tone and decide on a couple prints (3 max.)

Once you have decided on the style and colours that you will use you can go through your closet and select the pieces that fit the criteria.

You will start with basics such as plain tees, pants, jeans and skirts. These are the pieces which are in your base colour. As well as wardrobe samples such as white tees, blue jeans or black shoes. Remember these will change per season, winter you might wear turtlenecks and long sleeves and summer would change for tank tops and tees.

Next, you will select accent pieces like blouses, button ups, a skirt or jacket in your accent colours and patterns. These are the pieces you will mix and match with basics to create different looks.

Now you will choose layers and outerwear in your neutral colour. This can be things like cardigans, blazers, jackets, etc. These are pieces you want to last you a long time since they’re interchangeable with seasons and should not go out of style. It is also in this step where you will choose shoes.

Lastly choose a couple accessories and trending pieces, these are items that will likely only be used a couple times so there is no need to splurge. These can be things like statement heels, hats, sunglasses, bags, scarves, etc. But you need to remember to keep these in your accent colours or neutrals for cohesive outfits.

Now you have a fully functioning capsule wardrobe! Remember that your clothing will change a bit depending on the season of the year but having built a solid foundation you can adjust little details such as types of clothing and patterns worn.
