A culotte could be consider a skirt with a split. Meaning a wide pant that usually stops at mid-calf.
During the late nineteenth century culottes were used for horseback riding so that women could sit astride a horse with a man's saddle rather than riding side saddle.
Later, this pants provided women more freedom to do other activities, such as cleaning, bike, riding, gardening without losing the skirt look.
Fashion 2018 is definitely a year in which culottes are all over the place. They are comfortable and can be upgrade for the evening or just wear it casual for the day.
